Data sources and licences
| Source | What we use | Licence | Data status |
|---|---|---|---|
| European Central Bank – euro reference rates | euro reference rates for about 30 currencies, on working days at around 16:00 CET | reuse permitted with attribution | data: 2 November 2026 fetched: 3 November 2026 |
| National Bank of Poland – tables A and B of average rates (in złoty) | average rates in złoty from table A (daily, about 30 currencies) and table B (Wednesdays, about 115 currencies), downloaded through the NBP API (api.nbp.pl) once a working day, only the last few days; the conversion to euros (using the EUR rate from table A) and to other currencies is our own calculation, not a rate published by the NBP | reuse with credit to the source and a link to www.nbp.pl (nbp.pl terms of use, § 1(8)) | data: 2 November 2026 fetched: 3 November 2026 |
| The Economist – Big Mac Index | Big Mac prices in local currency and their US dollar equivalent from the latest edition of the index | MIT | data: 1 July 2026 fetched: 3 November 2026 |

| World Bank – World Development Indicators (ICP) | consumer price level (PA.NUS.PRVT.PLI, USA = 100) from the International Comparison Program | CC BY 4.0 | data: 2025 fetched: 3 November 2026 |
NBP: the nbp.pl terms of use allow reuse of the materials with credit to the source and a link to www.nbp.pl (§ 1(8)), without altering or distorting them (§ 1(7)) and without excessive automated downloading (§ 5(1)) – every NBP rate on this site is therefore credited “Source: NBP” with a link to www.nbp.pl and marked as converted by us. The licence of the Food Prices for Nutrition dataset should be confirmed with the source before wider use – the data are free of charge, but the licence is not stated right next to them. The ECB notes that its reference rates are for information purposes only.

How we calculate
- Exchange rates are mid rates: units of a currency per 1 euro. The rate between any two currencies is the ratio of their euro rates. We take the ECB rate first, then NBP, and for pegged currencies quoted by neither bank (e.g. the ngultrum, the Bermudian dollar, the Falkland Islands pound) we derive it from the anchor currency's rate. The NBP publishes mid rates in złoty – we divide them by the NBP EUR rate from the same day, so the rate to the euro (and to every other currency) is our calculation based on NBP data, not an NBP rate. Every rate is shown with its date and source – rates from NBP table B may be a few days old.
- Prices are shown in the currency the source published them in. To convert to the currency selected on the map we take the US dollar equivalent from the period of the data (at the rate the source used – the survey-day rate in the Big Mac Index, the annual average rate in World Bank data) and convert it at the latest rate. This keeps inflation in weak-currency countries from distorting the result, but the value in the selected currency may differ from converting the local price at today's rate.
- The euro area in the Big Mac Index: The Economist publishes one average price for the euro area – on the map every member state shows it (with a note next to the price).
- The map splits countries into seven classes with a similar number of countries each (quantiles); the thresholds are in the selected currency.
What's still missing
The basket should also include: coffee in a café (1 cappuccino), beer in a bar (0.5 l), bread (1 kg), transit ticket (1 ride in the capital). There is no open, licensed multi-country dataset of such prices – the popular cost-of-living comparison sites keep their data proprietary. Prices will be added by hand, each with its source (e.g. a statistics office, an operator's fare list) and date; until then these items do not appear on the map.
Privacy
The site uses no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. Visits are counted by our own Matomo instance in cookieless mode – no profiling and no data shared with advertisers. The currency converter runs entirely in your browser.
One exception: if you choose the light or dark theme yourself (the switch in the header), your browser remembers that choice in its local storage (localStorage). It stays on your device and is never sent to us; in automatic mode nothing is stored.
